Declaración con motivo del segundo aniversario del asesinato del defensor Juan López en Honduras
Al cumplirse dos años del vil y aún impune asesinato de nuestro compañero Juan López, declaramos lo siguiente:
1. Recordamos con cariño y tristeza a nuestro coordinador, amigo, hermano y compañero Juan López, cuyo trabajo, visión y liderazgo fueron un pilar fundamental en Tocoa y más allá en la lucha por el agua, el territorio y una vida digna para todas las personas y comunidades afectadas por los daños de las empresas extractivas. Su convicción inquebrantable, su postura contra la corrupción y su labor en busca de justicia y rendición de cuentas no tuvieron respuestas del Estado. Nos comprometemos a continuar la lucha de la que Juan López formó parte para garantizar una vida en condiciones dignas para todas las personas y comunidades afectadas por los efectos devastadores del sistema capitalista y neoliberal que pone las ganancias por encima de las personas y a las condiciones necesarias para una vida plena y digna.
2. Lamentamos que persisten las amenazas contra las y los defensores del medio ambiente, y exigimos al Estado que tome medidas de inmediato para cumplir con su responsabilidad de proteger a las personas defensoras y de salvaguardar los recursos naturales, el Corredor Mesoamericano, el Parque Nacional Montaña de Botaderos Carlos Escaleras y los ríos que nacen en el área protegida ya que el futuro de nuestros hijos e hijas depende del agua, los árboles y la tierra y territorio para nuestras familias. Exigimos la aplicación inmediata del Decreto 18-2024 y respaldamos a las comunidades que continúen su valiente resistencia contra los megaproyectos que atentan contra la vida. Exigimos además la aplicación inmediata de las medidas cautelares ordenadas por la CIDH y otras medidas de protección para salvaguardar la vida.
3. Condenamos al Estado por no abordar los problemas estructurales que condujeron al asesinato de Juan López; condenamos la inacción del Ministerio Publico en el avance de los procesos penales, incluida la captura de todos los autores intelectuales del asesinato de Juan López, quienes pagaron y ordenaron su asesinato, y los responsables del daño irreparable al medio ambiente natural y los bienes comunes de Tocoa debido a los proyectos extractivos de minería y energía, y al Poder Judicial por poner en libertad a los coautores del crimen contra Juan López, lo que permite que la red criminal responsable de su muerte actúe libremente en la zona y reaviva las amenazas que ensombrecieron la vida de Juan López antes de su asesinato.
4. Hacemos un llamado a la comunidad nacional e internacional para que nos acompañe este 17 de septiembre en el Tribunal de Jurisdicción Nacional de Tegucigalpa, con motivo de la audiencia inicial de Lenir Pérez, presidente de Emco y responsable de Pinares y Ecotek, por los delitos ambientales y la devastación en la Montaña de Botaderos, provocados por la minería ilegal. No se puede subestimar la importancia de esta audiencia, ya que es la primera vez que un empresario de este nivel es llevado ante la justicia por delitos ambientales, comprobados mediante una investigación y documentación exhaustivas. La audiencia debe dar lugar a un auto de formal procesamiento y Lenir Pérez y todos los responsables deben pagar las consecuencias. Es importante recordar que este proceso legal lo iniciaron Juan López y el CMDBCPT y seguiremos honrando el legado de Juan López a través de este caso y de otros procesos por los que él luchó para que se hiciera justicia.
A lo largo de estos días hemos rendido homenaje a la vida de nuestro compañero Juan López mediante actividades culturales y espirituales, así como debates y foros públicos. Con una caminata para la exigencia de Justicia , pedimos a la comunidad nacional e internacional que conmemora la vida de Juan López en sus países a realizar acciones de incidencia ante el Estado y que siga protegiendo la vida y la naturaleza en su memoria y todas las personas que nos han dado un ejemplo de lucha para una vida digna donde la comunidad, la familia y los Pueblos tienen justicia.
Juan vive, la lucha sigue!

On the second anniversary of the vile and still unpunished murder of our comrade Juan López, we declare the following:
1. We remember with affection and sadness our coordinator, friend, brother, and comrade Juan López, whose work, vision, and leadership were a fundamental pillar in Tocoa and beyond in the struggle for water, territory, and a dignified life for all people and communities affected by the harm caused by extractive companies. His unwavering conviction, his stance against corruption, and his work in pursuit of justice and accountability went unaddressed by the State. We commit to continuing the struggle in which Juan López played a part to guarantee a life of dignity for all people and communities affected by the devastating effects of the capitalist and neoliberal system, which prioritizes profits over people and the conditions necessary for a full and dignified life.
2. We deplore the continuing threats against environmental defenders, and we demand that the government take immediate action to fulfill its responsibility to protect these defenders and to safeguard natural resources, the Mesoamerican Corridor, the Carlos Escaleras Montaña de Botaderos National Park, and the rivers that originate in the protected area, since the future of our children depends on water, trees, and the land and territory for our families. We demand the immediate implementation of Decree 18-2024 and stand in solidarity with the communities as they continue their courageous resistance against megaprojects that threaten life. We also demand the immediate implementation of the precautionary measures ordered by the IACHR and other protective measures to safeguard life.
3. We condemn the State for failing to address the structural problems that led to the murder of Juan López; we condemn the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s inaction in advancing criminal proceedings, including the arrest of all the masterminds behind Juan López’s murder—those who paid for and ordered his killing— as well as those responsible for the irreparable damage to the natural environment and the common goods of Tocoa caused by extractive mining and energy projects; and we condemn the Judiciary for releasing the co-perpetrators of the crime against Juan López, which allows the criminal network responsible for his death to operate freely in the area and reignites the threats that cast a shadow over Juan López’s life prior to his murder.
4. We call on the national and international community to join us on September 17 at the National Jurisdiction Court in Tegucigalpa for the initial hearing of Lenir Pérez, president of Emco and head of Pinares and Ecotek, regarding the environmental crimes and devastation in the Montaña de Botaderos caused by illegal mining. The importance of this hearing cannot be underestimated, as it is the first time a business leader of this caliber has been brought to justice for environmental crimes, which have been substantiated through exhaustive investigation and documentation. The hearing must result in an indictment, and Lenir Pérez and all those responsible must face the consequences. It is important to remember that this legal process was initiated by Juan López and the CMDBCPT, and we will continue to honor Juan López’s legacy through this case and other legal proceedings in which he fought for justice.
Over the past few days, we have paid tribute to the life of our comrade Juan López through cultural and spiritual activities, as well as debates and public forums. Through a march today demanding justice, we call on the national and international community—which is commemorating Juan López’s life in their respective countries—to take advocacy actions with their governments and to continue protecting life and nature in his memory, as well as in memory of all those who have set an example of struggle for a dignified life where communities, families, and all Peoples have justice.
