ALERTA URGENTE: Audiencia contra Adán Fúnez por asesinato de Juan López se celebra en contexto de riesgos crecientes

Ante la audiencia inicial de hoy, 15 de mayo de 2026 en el Juzgado de Letras Territorial Nacional de San Pedro Sula, contra Adán Fúnez, Héctor Méndez y Juan Ángel Ramos, acusados del asesinato de nuestro compañero y defensor ambiental Juan López, así como de asociación ilícita por su presunta participación en la estructura criminal que planificó y ejecutó este crimen, hacemos un llamado urgente a garantizar la protección integral y la seguridad de todas las víctimas de este caso y su equipo legal.

Exigimos medidas inmediatas de protección para la familia de Juan López, el Comité Municipal de Defensa de los Bienes Comunes y Públicos de Tocoa (CMDBCPT), el Bufete Justicia para los Pueblos (BJP), las personas testigos y todas las comunidades afectadas por las redes criminales vinculadas a las empresas de las familia Pérez Facussé en el Bajo Aguán.

La extrema violencia en el Bajo Aguán y el accionar de estructuras criminales que protegen intereses económicos y políticos han sido denunciados reiteradamente por organizaciones sociales, campesinas y territoriales, sin que el Estado haya tomado acciones reales para desmantelarlas ni garantizar protección efectiva a las víctimas. Estas estructuras continúan operando y mantienen poder e influencia en el territorio.

Como parte de la estructura criminal violenta, Adán Fúnez está acusado de haber coordinado con su colaborador Héctor Méndez la planificación y ejecución del asesinato de Juan López. Según la acusación, Méndez se puso en contacto con Juan Ángel Ramos, quien recurrió a su mano derecha, Óscar Alexis Guardado Alvarenga, hoy señalado como el presunto gatillero. Guardado Alvarenga, a su vez, habría reclutado a Lenin Adony Cruz Munguía y Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres para colaborar en la ejecución del crimen.

Óscar Alexis Guardado Alvarenga, Lenin Adony Cruz Munguía y Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres enfrentarán juicio en junio de 2026 en el Tribunal de Sentencia Territorial Nacional de Tegucigalpa, por los delitos de asesinato y asociación para delinquir. 

Todos los imputados vinculados a este caso deben permanecer en prisión preventiva debido a su capacidad de ejercer influencia y violencia en la zona, intimidar a testigos, alterar pruebas e interferir en las investigaciones en curso.

Es mas, recordamos que esta audiencia ocurre a pocos días de la audiencia inicial de Lenir Pérez, programada para el 25 de mayo, acusado de los delitos de extracción ilegal de recursos naturales y daños agravados contra el Parque Nacional Carlos Escaleras. En este contexto, observamos una activación de fuerzas políticas y económicas poderosas en la región, incrementando el riesgo inminente para las personas defensoras y comunidades organizadas. Responsabilizamos al Estado hondureño por cualquier daño que puedan sufrir las víctimas, testigos o personas defensoras en este contexto.

Hacemos un llamado a la comunidad nacional e internacional a mantenerse vigilante, acompañar y seguir las audiencias y pronunciarse exigiendo:

1️. Protección integral e inmediata para la familia of Juan Lopez, las víctimas, testigos, integrantes del CMDBCPT, el BJP y las comunidades afectadas.

2️. Auto de formal procesamiento y prisión preventiva para Adán Fúnez, Héctor Méndez y Juan Ángel Ramos, considerando la gravedad de los delitos imputados, el riesgo de fuga y su capacidad de influir en las investigaciones.

3️. Garantías para la preservación de las pruebas y la continuidad de las investigaciones hasta identificar y acusar a todas las personas responsables de la estructura criminal detrás del asesinato de Juan López.

URGENT ALERT: Today's hearing against Adán Fúnez for Murder of Juan Lopez in Midst of Climate of Increased Risks

As we prepare or the initial hearing today, May 15, 2026, at the National Territorial Court of First Instance in San Pedro Sula, against Adán Fúnez, Héctor Méndez, and Juan Ángel Ramos, accused of the murder of our comrade and environmental defender Juan López, as well as of criminal association for their alleged participation in the criminal structure that planned and carried out this crime, we issue an urgent call to guarantee the comprehensive protection and safety of all the victims in this case and their legal team. 

We demand immediate protective measures for the family of Juan López, the Municipal Committee for the Defense of Common and Public Goods of Tocoa (CMDBCPT), the Justice for the Peoples Law Firm (BJP), the witnesses, and all the communities affected by the criminal networks linked to the companies of the Pérez Facussé family in the Bajo Aguán region.

The extreme violence in the Bejo Aguán and the actions of criminal structures protecting economic and political interests have been repeatedly denounced by social, peasant, and territorial organizations, yet the State has taken no real action to dismantle them or guarantee effective protection for the victims. These structures continue to operate and maintain power and influence in the region.

As part of the violent criminal structure, Adán Fúnez is accused of having coordinated with his collaborator Héctor Méndez the planning and execution of the murder of Juan López. According to the indictment, Méndez contacted Juan Ángel Ramos, who turned to his right-hand man, Óscar Alexis Guardado Alvarenga, now identified as the alleged triggerman. Guardado Alvarenga, in turn, allegedly recruited Lenin Adony Cruz Munguía and Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres to assist in carrying out the crime.

Óscar Alexis Guardado Alvarenga, Lenin Adony Cruz Munguía, and Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres will stand trial in June 2026 at the National Territorial Sentencing Court in Tegucigalpa on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.

All defendants linked to this case must remain in pretrial detention due to their ability to exert influence and violence in the area, intimidate witnesses, tamper with evidence, and interfere with ongoing investigations.

Furthermore, we note that this hearing is taking place just days before the initial hearing for Lenir Pérez, scheduled for May 25, who is accused of the crimes of illegal extraction of natural resources and aggravated damage to Carlos Escaleras National Park. In this context, we observe the mobilization of powerful political and economic forces in the region, which increases the imminent risk to human rights defenders and organized communities. We hold the Honduran State responsible for any harm that victims, witnesses, or defenders may suffer in this context.

We call on the national and international community to remain vigilant, attend and monitor the hearings, and speak out to demand:

1️. Comprehensive and immediate protection for the family of Juan Lopez, victims, witnesses, members of the CMDBCPT, the BJP, and the affected communities.

2️. Formal indictment and pretrial detention for Adán Fúnez, Héctor Méndez, and Juan Ángel Ramos, given the seriousness of the alleged crimes, the risk of flight, and their ability to influence the investigations.

3️. Guarantees for the preservation of evidence and the continuation of investigations until all those responsible for the criminal network behind the murder of Juan López are identified and charged.
